CHAPTER 14

Dean

Forrester Estate

“The seven major magics are?” Dorthy asked the assembled class.

The view screen behind her read the exact question she had asked. In front of her sat the ten active members of Team Ola. Dean and his troops occupied a row and behind them was Lonny with his full team.

When no one answered at first, Patti cleared her throat and said, “Fire, lightning, air, water, earth, healing, arcane or is it light?”

“Arcane and very good,” Dorthy said and the screen changed over to one word—limitations. The word was gigantic and looming on the display. “All master mages meditate, study, and seek new knowledge. Why?”

Nick, the newest member of Lonny’s team, said, “To increase their mana pool.”

“Exactly. Now, what I’m about to get into is considered controversial. My job is to provide the information, your job is to properly utilize it. Dean brought up a good talking point when he asked me a question earlier. He’d had a conversation with a vendor that left him conflicted.”

Dean snorted, remembering how quickly Grosca had dismissed the value of his javelins.

“In this example, the said vendor, in my opinion, was not only wrong, but dumb. Mazes grow in strength. They become more challenging as you progress with more length and monsters inside. When all this adds up, it’s commonsense that a level seventy floor is riskier than a seven.

“I want you to think about something,” Dorthy continued. “When flinging a rock with air magic, you can get it up to such a speed that it will cause a sonic boom. That noise reverberates throughout the maze.”

She clapped her hands for effect. Leena cried out from the kitchen, and an angry momma Cassandra popped her head out to glare daggers at Dorthy, who covered her mouth apologetically.

“Sorry, Cassandra. And this is exactly what I mean. I pulled aggro, in video game terms.” She frowned and ducked her head, “and in real life, apparently, my ruckus caused a commotion. The cause had an effect. More monsters or mobs further in the chain become aware that you’re in the area. Your battle line falters, and you wipe or scramble back to the black portal of defeat—suffering the most ignominious of deaths.”

Kambry tilted her head to the side in confusion.

“Perfect, Kambry is frowning. She hasn’t lived through this type of death yet—death from embarrassment, or survivor’s guilt. I have,” Dorthy said and tucked her chin down, wiping at her eyes. Her pause was reflective as she took a couple of deep breaths to regain her composure.

“It’s okay if you –” Dean began.

“No Dean,” Dorthy sighed, “let my lesson be your gain. Limitations is on this screen for a very good reason. The question you should focus on, though, should not be why mages are limited, but instead… how. How are mages limited? And how was that vendor oh so very wrong? I was on floor sixty-eight. Our team of five spawned outside of a city. The city itself was the maze, assuming we could get in.

“I was a backline mage.
